I-500 Snowmobile Race43rd Annual International 500 Snowmobile Race February 2011 The track was actually set on an old creek bed of gravel and clay. The site was originally developed in World War II as an ammunition dump. The track was built in less than six months purely by volunteer help. The first year, the race was so slow that spectators could actually walk across the track between machines. The Soo Welcome Home Troops Thousands of grateful community members lined the streets of Sault Ste. Marie today for a parade in the honor of the 1437th Multi-Role Bridge Company on their return from a 9 month stint in Iraq.
The troops helped build, de-construct and repair forty eight bridges across Iraq to improve military, civilian and commerce movement. The parade ended at Brady Park where the troops were awarded medals and enjoyed bands from the U.S. And Canada. The community planned to party at the park until it got dark and then move the celebration to the American Legion post. Sault Ste. Marie put on a similar event when the troops returned in 2003 and everyone involved was impressed with today's celebration. Capt. Daniel Mills says that with the way the military rotates troops and without some unforeseen circumstances, this squad should be home for good. |
